Penang Street @ Funan

Not much choice for food in Funan.
So we settled for Penang Street, the menu looked good.

First outlet outside of Korea - Mad for Garlic

We decided to try this place out for birthday celebration. My friend saw this groupon voucher and wanted to test out if it works. So she bought the voucher to use.

It is located at the obscure end of eateries, in an indirect human traffic location. Basically it is not a must-pass by route.
You will need to pass by Starbucks & Ding Tai feng to get to the restaurant.

I must say the location is not so good, so it is difficult to get walk-in crowd.

I personally been to the Starbucks beside it & never recall seeing Mad for Garlic :)

Anyway, we decided to eat at this place and surprisingly first impression was quite good. The ambience looks classy. I kind of like it because of the display of wine on one side.

We had our seat in a comfortable booth and started checking out the menu.

The waitress came and gave us a lot of recommendation.

We ordered a nacho pizza, a lobster cream pasta and garlic fried rice.

A while later, a higher position looking waitress (maybe manager) came and told us nacho pizza ran out of beef. We were quite surprised given that it is only 1pm on Friday. How are they going to cope with business with such planning? We replaced with snowy pizza but couldn't help wonder if it is due to the voucher that we were 'not-allowed' to order the nacho pizza :)

However, we didn't let that spoil our happy mood.

Cobb Salad - a lot of olive oil

Lobster Garlic Pasta - recommend

Garlic Fried Rice

snowing pizza - yummy *disclaimer I like sweet stuff

2 scoops is not = double scoop @ Swensen's

I must say we had a interesting event at Swensen's over the weekend.
We frequent Swensen's almost on a weekly basis. We usually ordered 2 ice-cream to share among 3 persons. (The evil wanna eat but still afraid of putting on weight)
Our typical order is always plain scoops of ice cream for the one who does not like any topping at all and an other type like cookie summit, coit tower, mighty nutty etc.
This time, we asked for 2 scoops, one vanilla & one macadamia flavour. The other order is a might nutty. The waitress took it that we wanted 2 separate single scoop ice cream and proceed to send us in separate cups. Unknowingly, my boy ate up the 2 cups of ice-cream  and I did not give much thoughts to it except commenting that 'so funny, why she must separate the ice-cream.

After settling the bill, I then realised that we were charged 2 single scoops ice cream of $4.50 each (total $9) instead of the double scoops which cost $6.50.
What I wanted to put across is the poor service then took place. I feedback that I wanted 2 scoops and not 2 single scoops, however because I have made payment, the cashier refused to reverse the bill. She asked if they were served in 2 single cups and i replied yes. So she insisted that I ordered wrongly and hence it was my fault and there was nothing much she can do. She even had the cheek to said I must order using the word DOUBLE and not 2 scoops.
What kind of service is? I am utterly speechless.

It gave me a feeling that double scoop order will be lesser than a single scoop!!!
Is that why they won't reverse the mistake?

I wondered if I have ordered a double and separate them, what would they charge me?

It is a buyer's beware market !!! Caveat emptor!

Dinner at Ah Loy Thai Shaw Tower

I personally find this place over-hype.
The food mostly cooked sweet based, so if you are not into sweet stuff, you will it them overwhelming.
Luckily I got sweet-tooth.
Ah Loy Thai

Menu

The shop

Our order for 3 pax - in the end curry was sold out

We recommend
1. Pandan Chicken
2. Tomyum soup

These 2 dishes are quite excellent.

Here is a look at some of the other dishes we ordered.

Mango Salad - we wondered why there is so much sauce

The hot red milk tea is not hot at all and very sweet

Recommended

This tofu is pretty tasty too

Very sweet Pad Thai

Veg is very raw

Butter calamari ordered based on recommendation but see most people ordered the normal fried calamari

Also very raw

Nice!

Do note that they only accept cash payment.
You need to go to the cashier to place order.
They only take reservation for 10 pax at 6:30pm.
The rest are walk-in, do not bother to call if you do not have 10 or cant make it at 6:30pm. It is difficult to get a response from them. Either no one picks up, went to voice mail, or no reply to sms.
When we were there, they rejected customers at 7:55pm onwards.
NO Service Charge & GST could be the biggest draw

Birthday Celebration Lunch with BFF

Causeway Point
First Time trying Watami since there is no queue.
We were served almost immediately after keying in our request at the system outside the restaurant.
We had a nice lovely quiet seating place. It was not very crowded at 1:40pm on a Sat.
I think partly due to the slightly higher pricing in this restaurant.
However, I personally think the food quality is pretty good.
Hi-tech queuing for seat system

Fresh

This is very nice, pork dish

This is also nice :) beef curry

standard must-have in jap restaurant

Pizza Hut - Cheesy 7 Pockets Pizza

Verdict :- If you are a cheese lover, yes you will love it.

The 7 types of cheeses are

Romano

Parmesan
Provolone
Cream Cheese
Monterey Jack
Cheddar
Mozzarella

We ordered the tropical hawaiian where the ingredients are placed in the centre as shown on the picture. I personally find the 'pockets' part very yummy where as the ingredients portion has its own unique taste.
I will order the original the next time thou the price difference is only S$1.

You can do add on with cheesy 7 pockets order, like sweet n spicy drumlets, one of our must-have at pizza hut @ at reduced price.

Canton Paradise @ StarVista

All day dim-sum menu
Even though we were sitting somewhere in the middle of the restaurant, away from the entrance, we were feeling quite hot in the middle of the meal.
The serving of the food was very fast, such that we were unable to match with our speed of eating, making some steam dishes very cold in the end.

 Wonton soup was so-so
 Porridge ok
By the time i tried this, was way too cold.
 Char siew bun was good
 Egg tarts were yummy

Newly open Dian Xiao Er @ J8

Good points
  • Very friendly staff;
  • Aircon was just nice unlike previous tenant;
  • Yummy chilli

Improvements:
  • Rice with soup was served a good 8 mins before any dish was ready. By the time the first dish arrived, both rice and soup were cold. At least the waitress was alert and changed the soup for us.
  • Our dining table was unbalance and shaking when we had dinner. We informed the staff but no action was taken. Given that it is new, we are quite disappointed

Points to note:
  • Water is chargeable
  • Wet tissue is chargeable
  • Tea is $2.20 per pax
  • Peanuts is $2.00 per plate
  • All subject to 10% service charge and 7% GST. Equivalent to additional 17.7%.

Dining in Singapore no longer has free supply of water and wet tissue. Inflation!!!!

Grub @ Bishan Park

A very cozy eating place right in the middle of the lovely Bishan park.
Bishan Park is very well maintained and spans across quite a big area from Bishan Road (which is one street from CTE AMK 1 exit to Upper Thomson Road.
Grub is situated on the park which is nearer to upper thomson side.

Verdict: Food is average, not especially delicious. Had better waffle before. Come for the different feel of the environment.
No queue if you are willing to sit non-aircon alfresco dining. Come early if you want indoor seating.
